Join Carmen Lawrence at The University of Western Australia’s UWA Extension public lecture Exporting Democracy, Monday 7 – 8.30pm, October 29, 2007.

Join Carmen Lawrence at a public lecture where she will raise questions about freedom and the modern democracy divide between areas of the world still governed by dictatorships and monarchs and the Australian political system. Can democracy successfully be exported?

Lawrence suggests that before the concept of democracy can be transposed into other parts of the world we must first question what is a healthy democracy.

"There has been a lot of talk of late about the virtue of spreading democracy to those corners of the globe still ruled by monarchs, dictators and juntas of various persuasions. If we're going to export democracy, it's not unreasonable to ask a few fundamental questions about what we regard as a healthy, functioning democracy and to test recommended models for emerging democracies against these criteria. What exactly do we mean by democracy? What are the key values and characteristics of modern democracies? How do we judge the success of the democracies currently in operation and which forms should we be recommending to the newly emerging democracies? Carmen Lawrence.

Lawrence will also discus issues about Australia’s own democratic system. Lawrence: ‘Just how democratic is the Australian - and for that matter - the United States' political system? Does our performance measure up to the rhetoric? And if not, is there anything we can or should do about it?"

An insightful public lecture that will raise many questions about the understanding of the Australian democratic process, it’s history, freedom values, responsibility and tradition.
