But, as you can discover at The University of Western Australia next week, future computers are likely to use the strange properties of quantum mechanics – such as objects being in two places at once – to solve problems that are impossible with conventional computers.
Professor Andrew White of the University of Queensland will use cartoons, a demonstration and no equations in his lecture on discoveries in quantum computing at UWA’s Ross Lecture Theatre, Physics Building, at 6pm on Tuesday, November 13.
He will talk about building a quantum computer with light, explain the concepts of quantum superposition and entanglement in everyday, even culinary, terms, and report the latest breakthroughs.
