The University of Western Australia is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students particularly those undertaking postgraduate study, the University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said today.

UWA has around 200 Indian students on campus, of which more than 160 are postgraduates and the remainder undergraduate students.

"The University's reputation for international excellence has enabled us to attract students from the most distinguished Indian institutions, colleges and universities," Professor Robson said.

"We are pleased that this University is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students seeking a quality education and a complete student experience."

Professor Robson said the developing relationship between India and Australia, highlighted by Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith during a speech at The University Club of WA today, was reflected in the student enrolments and other links between the University and India.

Mr Smith, a UWA graduate, said Australian universities "meet the standards and the curriculum choices of India's high-achieving youth".

Australia is now the second favourite destination worldwide for Indian students, after the United States.

"Our University has been working to strengthen its links with India, a move which has seen a steady increase in student enrolments, particularly from postgraduate students," Professor Robson said.

"In recent years, delegations from our University, led by Professor Doug McEachern, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) have visited India to further develop our educational and research collaboration."

"UWA has also been sponsoring the Western Warriors pre-season tour to India for the last two years. We are supporting the tour again this year, which will be held in mid-September."

"We are looking forward to building a long-term relationship with India."
