Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of The University of Western Australia's Centre for Water Research, Jorg Imberger, has been elected a Fellow to Britain's Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Imberger is one of 44 pioneering engineers from around the world recognised in 2008 by the Academy, which promotes engineering and technical welfare internationally.

He joins visionary engineers and academics who have excelled in a variety of fields, from medical imaging to aeronautics and energy technology, demonstrating that engineering is at the heart of modern society.

"The election of Professor Imberger to the Royal Academy of Engineering is a reflection of the international excellence attained by many of our researchers," UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said.  "This University is situated in one of the world's most isolated cities, yet has contributed greatly to solving some of the global community's most urgent problems, including water-use."

Professor Imberger has received international awards for projects involving iconic locations such as Venice Lagoon, Lake Como, Lake Victoria, and the Sea of Galilee.

Earlier this year, Professor Imberger was invited to London by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to give the prestigious Prince Philip Lecture and dine at the 250-year-old Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts (RSA), one of the UK's oldest and most respected thinktanks, in the presence of Prince Philip, chair of the event.
