On 19 April 2007, the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics organised the First Year Engineering Course and Career Day. This event brought together the 620 students in the First Year Engineering cohort. At UWA, engineering students undertake a common first year. This enabled students to become familiar with the engineering programmes available to them.

The First Year Course and Careers Day has 3 aims. The first aim was to provide an interactive expo for students to find out about the engineering programmes from UWA staff and graduates. The second aim was to provide students with the opportunity to meet with industry representatives and discuss career options. The final aim was to help the students to establish a sense of belonging to the engineering community.
As the First Year Coordinator, Ms Yola Szymakowski aims to encourage students to think of themselves as Engineers-in-Training through practising, acting and thinking as an Engineer.

Six times throughout the year, each of the Schools of Engineering at UWA will host a day aimed at helping students to understand the work environment for Engineers. These days are called Office Fridays and first year students are encouraged to attend. The first successful Office Friday was recently hosted by the School of Civil and Resource Engineering and provided the students with opportunities to practice their networking skills with industry and staff in a social setting. Similar events will be held throughout the year to allow first year students to develop a sense of belonging to the engineering community and their cohort. Student feedback on the First Year Engineering Course and Careers Advisory Day and Office Friday was very positive
