The Engineering Class of ’78 celebrated their 30th anniversary with a dinner at The University Club on Friday 12 October 2007. An excellent response to the reunion invitation resulted in 27 attendees, including Tom Krapeshlis from Sydney and Kit Wignall from Melbourne.

Guests to the pre-dinner drinks included Professor Mark Bush (Dean of the Faculty), Professor Andrew Deeks (Head of School of Civil and Resource Engineering), Professor James Trevelyan, Associate Professor Gary Bundell, Professor Terry Woodings, Associate Professor Brett Nener and Quang Ly (Engineering Faculty Development Officer).

The University Club, which served a delicious dinner, also accommodated table rotations at each course enabling fond reunion stories to be enjoyed by all. The highlight of the evening was the celebration of significant accomplishments in the practice of engineering. In addition, donated bottles of wine (thanks to Rob Puglisi, Lycopodium and others) were awarded as prizes for

  • Most number of employers - Peter Trinder and Geoff Miles
  • Most changed - Tom Krapeshlis
  • Least changed – Judith Uren
  • Most exhilarating life experience – Ian Duncan
  • Most children – Bob Osmetti
  • Overseas the longest – Rob Clark
  • Longest duration with an employer – Ian Chevis and Joe Miotti
  • Lived in one house the longest – Kevin Quadros

The Class of 1978 could be labelled predictable and boring, but certainly committed and down to earth. No one had been married twice and there was not one grandchild between us!

A special thanks to Quang Ly who did a fantastic job of facilitating the event. He was also a marvellous help to the organising committee which included Bob Osmetti, Rob Puglisi and Judith Uren.

We look forward to the next gathering.
