Professor Barry Marshall will deliver a public lecture at The University of Western Australia's UWA Extension Summer School, on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at 7.30pm to 9pm.

Professor Barry Marshall and Emeritus Professor Robin Warrens - Nobel Prize win in Physiology or Medicine - have opened the doors for researchers pursuing funding opportunities in Western Australia.

Professor Marshall will speak at a UWA Extension Summer School Public lecture about his continuing research on Helicobacter pylori.

The results of this research attracted further funding, research staff and international visitors, ultimately encouraging international competitive research about stomach ulcers and attracting the inte rest of biotechnology companies.

The success of the research lead to the establishment of The Marshall Centre in 2007 at The University of Western Australia.

This research centre celebrates the award of the Nobel Prize to Professor Marshall and Professor Warren who carried out ground-breaking research on Helicobacter pylori , proving that this bacterium is the cause of most stomach ulcers.

‘The thing about Western Australia is that it's a little incubation chamber.  I was able to work for a couple of years and be rather eccentric and brash and do weird experiments, all the things that I wanted to do,' Professor Marshall said.

This fascinating lecture will highlight Western Australia's position in the global research arena and what is next for this Nobel Prize Laureate.
