Teaching and research activities in Western Australia have received a boost with the announcement of a $150,000 donation from Mitsui & Co (Australia) Ltd and Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty Ltd to The University of Western Australia.

At an official signing ceremony today, Mitsui Chairman and Managing Director Yasuhide Fukatsu said the company has long term interests in WA and was grateful for the support from local business partners, the State Government and the broader community.

"By contributing to the UWA Business School Campaign, we are investing in future business leaders.  Our aim is to contribute to the future prosperity of the state and Australia," said Mr Fukatsu.

UWA Vice Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, welcomed the donation and congratulated Mitsui on its forward thinking and commitment to teaching and learning.

"Providing significant and challenging opportunities for students is pivotal for The University and our Business School as we work to develop a world-class centre of excellence in business education and research for our future business leaders," Professor Robson said.

"The generous support will provide the Business School with a range of new opportunities to enhance our capacity for the benefit of business and industry, and ultimately the State as a whole."

Business School Dean Tracey Horton said the School's fundraising campaign, launched a year ago, had received immense support from the business community and individuals and was close to achieving a target of $25 million.

"The vision for this campaign is to position the UWA Business School as one of the most influential Business Education Institutions across Asia and Australia - to inspire talented students to become respected and innovative leaders of tomorrow, provide an energising culture of international excellence in research, teaching and learning, promote an ethical and entrepreneurial spirit, and be a strong positive influence for alumni, business and government."

"Donations from companies such as Mitsui support our objective to ensure WA is recognised as an international hub for the development of business and leadership skills," she said.
