Cutting-edge projects in areas such as clean energy, biomedical engineering, mining, security and sensing are just some of those on display at The University of Western Australia's Engineering Foundation Research and Innovation Showcase this Wednesday, November 12.

The showcase aims to promote collaboration between research and industry and highlight the broad range of excellent research being done at the University.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the showcase demonstrated how researchers, often in collaboration with industry, were addressing complex, real-world engineering problems.

"It will highlight the research capabilities of our internationally renowned flagship research in areas such as the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems, the Centre for Ecohydrology and the Eureka Award-winning Microelectronics group," Professor Robson said.

"It's a clear demonstration of the types of issues that can be resolved - and the powerful research outcomes that can eventuate - when committed and like-minded people go forward in a cooperative and collaborative manner," Professor Robson said.

Research projects to be showcased include:

  • Professor Dongke Zhang's research into direct gas-to-liquid technologies will provide industry with more energy-efficient and cost-efficient scientific knowledge and competitive edge in a future energy marketplace.
  • Professor Mark Cassidy's work developing economical offshore pipelines to withstand treacherous ocean conditions and unstable seabeds using shallowly embedded offshore pipelines provides a cost-economic and function-efficient alternative to traditional trenching methods.
  • Dr Wei Liu's smart homes for successful ageing project aims to develop more flexible technology to monitor movement in a less obtrusive way, enabling older people to continue living independently for longer.
  • Dr Charitha Pattiaratchi's research into using ocean gliders to measure physical, chemical and biological processes, rather than the very expensive ship-based measuring systems.

The UWA Engineering Foundation Research and Innovation Showcase will be held at 5.30pm this Wednesday, November 12, in the Banquet Hall at The University Club of Western Australia.
