If you’ve ever wondered what your pet rock is really made of, The University of Western Australia will have the answer during National Science Week.

The E de C Clarke Earth Science Museum will open daily from Sunday, August 19 to Saturday, August 25 (inclusive), with UWA’s resident ‘rock doctor’ – museum curator Dr Jenny Bevan – available for a consultation.

“People will be able to get their rock specimens identified and any earth sciences questions answered free of charge,” UWA Prospective Students Officer Chris Hale said.

“It’s also a great opportunity for people to check out the huge range of rock, mineral and fossil displays in our earth science museum.”

The museum - located in the School of Earth and Geological Sciences near the Sunken Gardens - will open on UWA Expo Day (Sunday 19 August) from 9-4pm and for the rest of the Science Week from 9.30am to 4.30pm (closing for lunch from 12.30pm to 1.30pm).

National Science Week is held annually and brings together schools, community groups, individuals and businesses in celebrating science by organising events.

The week aims to inspire students to pursue a career in science and encourages community participation in science-related projects.
