The University of Western Australia has been named among the top 100 in the world in the U.S. News ranking of 1,250 universities around the globe.

The U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings are based on 13 indicators that measure the academic research performance and global and regional reputations of universities in 75 countries. Students can use the rankings to explore international higher education options.

UWA was placed equal 81st out of 1,250 universities, the top university in Western Australia and number 7 in Australia and New Zealand.

In the U.S. News Rankings by Subject, UWA had six subjects in the top 100, including a top 20 placing in Plant and Animal Science, and a ranking of 22nd for Agricultural Sciences.

Also in the top 100: Environmental/Ecology (41), Geosciences (45), Clinical Medicine (93) and Psychiatry/Psychology (58).

UWA subjects achieved a top 200 ranking in Immunology (111), Pharmacology and Toxicology (117), Space Science (117), Social Sciences and Public Health (120), Molecular Biology and Genetics (129) Engineering (135), Arts and Humanities (147), Biology and Biochemistry (140), Neuroscience and Behaviour (159), and Economics and Business (159).

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said the results reflected UWA’s commitment to attract world-class staff from around the globe.

“The methodology of these rankings is based mainly on an institution’s global and regional research reputation,” Professor Freshwater said.

“Through our ‘Be Inspired’ campaign we have been strengthening our reputation for excellence through a strategy that fosters a high performance culture.”

“Students are attracted to study at UWA because we are home to some of the world’s leading experts in their fields who themselves were attracted here by our reputation for quality research. It’s a great reflection of our staffs’ commitment to excellence in research and teaching.”
