The Western Australian men’s U21 team has taken bronze at the recent 2018 Australian Championships in Sydney following a 3-1 win over the ACT.

Led by UWA Hockey Club’s Matthew Fisher, the team also included Coby Green, Daniel Timms and goalkeeper Christian Starkie all from UWA Hockey Club.

WA qualified for the finals with unbeaten form, topping Pool B with two wins and a draw.

Their assault on the competition came to a stop in the semi-finals, where a strong Victorian side dealt a 5-1 blow to the team.

An impressive 3-1 bounce-back against the ACT in the third place playoff then saw WA take the bronze.

Meanwhile, it was a mixed tournament for the WA women’s side, where two defeats in a row saw the team drop into the 7/8 playoffs.

The women’s team, which consisted of UWA students Philippa Morgan and Claudia Nielsen alongside the UWA Hockey Club’s Sara Foster, dominated Tasmania 7-2 to secure the seventh place finish.

The Hockey WA winter season is still underway, with UWA currently sitting third in the men’s 1s and fourth in the women’s 1s.
