For the very first time, the 2017 AWESOME Festival is partnering with University Theatres to present a spectacular Opening Weekend of events on campus at the University of Western Australia.

On Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October the campus will hum to the sound of creativity, imagination and the highest quality theatre for children in Perth.

In the Octagon Theatre Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories by Western Australian theatre company, Barking Gecko Theatre Company, will delight audiences. This stunning performance won the Helpmann Award for Children’s Theatre after its premiere season in 2016.

In the Dolphin Theatre chaos will reign in Bunk Puppets’ epic Slapdash Galaxy. Their lo-fi shadow puppet wizardry is a delight, as characters created from old boxes, bubble wrap, drinking straws and ping pong balls, appear before your very eyes.

In the Bradley Studio you can stretch your imagination and create, perform and film your own special effects scene in Green Screen Fantasy Workshops with Filmbites Screen Academy. Or meet real astronomers from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research for free 20-minute interactive tours of the solar system – you can meet the planets and make your own eclipses.

Crowd-favourite Madame Lark will take flight around the campus, whipping up her own alphabet of vocal interpretations.

Build whatever you can dream up with Imagination Playground, learn how to animate a picture using just elastic bands, paper and coloured pencils in our thaumatrope making activity, design and create a badge, make a wish and place it on our wishing line. There’s something for everyone at this amazing event.

CEO of AWESOME Arts, Jenny Simpson said "We are thrilled to be presenting a weekend of AWESOME Festival fun at UWA in 2017. The Octagon and Dolphin Theatres are such magical spaces for families and the stunning shows and activities that we’ve lined up promise to delight and inspire all who attend. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off our opening weekend."
