UWA student Brianne Yarran has recently returned from Canberra, where she sat in the National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP).

Brianne met with the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and the leader of the opposition Bill Shorten.

“It was also a great honour to meet the other young Indigenous politicians who took part in NIYP,” says Brianne, “Many of them travelled from really remote communities in order to contribute and listen to what others had to say.

The NIYP occurred over six days reaching into National Reconciliation Week, including the anniversaries of the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo decision. It was convened in the chamber of the House of Representatives. Fifty young Indigenous leaders debated a number of propositions and delivered adjournment speeches.

Brianne spoke on issues relating to her community and on her grandmother’s experience as a member of the Stolen Generation, and called for an improvement in school curriculums on Indigenous histories and issues.
