To date, four students from the University of Western Australia have been selected to represent Australia at the 2017 World University Games (Summer Universiade) in Taipei this August, with selections still continuing for several sports.

The Summer Universiade, held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation is the top event on the sporting calendar for universities worldwide, with teams chosen to represent Australia selected in consultation with National Sporting Organisations across the country.

Western Australian swimmers, Nicholas Brown and Alex Milligan have been selected in the squad following strong performances at the Australia Swimming Championships in Brisbane, Australia last month.

Brown – who is attending his second world university games – and Milligan from the UWA West Coast club will be joined on tour by WAIS coach Bud McAllister as part of a 19 strong swim team heading to Taipei.

At 21 years of age, Brown picked up a bronze medal in the final of the men’s 200m fly in Brisbane at the recent Australian Championships and has previously represented Australia at Youth Olympic level.

Milligan who trains under UWA West Coasts Michael Palfrey enjoyed a strong campaign at Nationals, qualifying for the final of the men’s 200m breaststroke, finishing in fourth place.

Competing as part of Australia’s athletics squad, UWA Student and University Athletics Club athlete Stephen Clough will contest the men’s pole vault event at the games.

Stephen has cleared the required qualifier height several times this year and recently won bronze at the Australian Athletics Championships held in Sydney.

Rounding out UWAs contingency for the games is 21 year old Alanah Maclaurin who has recently been selected onto the Australian Women’s Open Team.

WAs highest ranked Women’s epeeist, Alannah’s transcript is impressive both within the university sporting sector and on a national level.

Having represented Australia on the world stage in France, Barcelona, Helsinki and the Philippines in recent years, Alannah heads into the 2017 Summer Universiade as one to watch.

The World University Games will be held in Taipei City, Taiwan. And run from August 19-30.
