It was all smiles and giggles when a new mural featuring the Jacaranda tree was unveiled at a special morning tea at the UWA Early Learning Centre (ELC) last week.

In August last year ELC celebrated its 5th birthday. To further commemorate this big milestone in tiny tot years – the staff and pre-schoolers decided to embark on a collaborative mural.

Using the Jacaranda tree from the ELC’s logo as their inspiration, the children worked hard to transform the limestone bricks into a vibrant mosaic which now sits proudly in the pre-school yard at the UWA ELC.

Looking very much a like an art piece, the mural was designed by Brad Ladyman, a local architect, and former ELC parent and UWA staff member. The mural was also facilitated by Amy Bouckley, also staff, who dedicated many hours to teach the kids how to do the tiling with ‘a little bit of magic’.

“We spent so much time working tirelessly on this mural and the dedication of the staff to this project was amazing. I dedicate this mural to the wonderful staff here at ELC,” Amy said.

The idea to choose the Jacaranda tree did not only tie in with the Centre’s logo, but was also a fitting choice as it symbolises nature and sustainability, but also beautifully simplistic in design.

Laura Blackman who works at the ELC said the project, which ran through October and November last year, was made possible by the generous donation of tiles from the Tile Boutique and Carousel Ceramics from Cannington.

“I could not be more proud of the end-product but the true value of the project lies deeper in the connections we built, the skills we learnt and the relations we fostered along the way,” Laura said.

Based in Nedlands behind the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts and the Faculty of Education, UWA's Early Learning Centre provides quality care and education for up to 100 children to the age of five.
