As part of National Science Week, Dr Gail Alvares, Research Fellow at the Telethon Kids Institute and one of ABC Radio National’s Top 5 Scientists under 40 will take over ABC’s Snapchat today.

Snapchat is a popular mobile only app that allows you to send videos and pictures, and create story compilations.

Dr Alvares researches neuro-development in children, investigating novel and affordable ways to improve the quality of lives of children with autism. She’s looking forward to showing people what a typical week at the Telethon Kids Institute looks like.

“We see quite a lot of children, we would do a lot of tests with children, take biological samples and we would also do a community event.

"I'd like to show people the type of science that we do in the psychology area. We don't wear lab coats but we do work with very, very special kids who are the best kids in the world.”

If you’d like to follow Dr Alvares today, simply visit Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS) to get the app and create an account.

Click on the yellow ghost icon and "add friends" then "add by username" and type abcnewsau.
