The University of Western Australia’s Professor Richard Hobbs has been recognised for his exceptional contribution to the field of ecology with Honorary Membership of the prestigious Ecological Society of America.

Professor Hobbs, an IAS Distinguished Fellow with UWA’s School of Plant Biology, specialises in restoration ecology including projects such as woodland restoration on former agricultural land, speeding the return of flora and fauna to rehabilitated bauxite mines and understanding the impacts of urbanisation on native plant and animal communities.

His particular interests are in vegetation dynamics and management, invasive species, ecosystem restoration, conservation biology and landscape ecology.

The award citation said Professor Hobbs was “an innovative, collaborative scientist with proven capacity to bridge the fields of basic and applied ecology”.

“He laid foundation work in the area of novel ecosystems…and his research focuses on applying ecology in a rapidly changing world. He promotes ample, fruitful debate within our community and beyond,” the citation said.

Professor Hobbs is the author of more than 400 scientific publications and author or editor of 20 books. He has received many awards including the 2010 Ecological Society of Australia Gold Medal and 2011 Western Australian Scientist of the Year. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher in the field of environment/ecology.

The Ecological Society of America will present the 2016 awards on Monday 8 August in the US city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
