2016 Australian of the Year and national advocate for gender equality David Morrison will present this year’s Wallace Kyle Oration at The University of Western Australia next Tuesday 17 May.

The former Lieutenant General and retired Chief of the Australian Army will deliver the free public lecture, jointly presented by the McCusker Centre for Citizenship, the Institute of Advanced Studies at UWA and the Rotary Club of Perth.

In his address ‘ A man’s journey to better understanding the challenges facing Australia in the 21st century’ , Mr Morrison, now Chair of the Diversity Council Australia, will ask the questions ‘are we the best we can be and if not, what do we have to do to make us so?’

The McCusker Centre for Citizenship Director Michelle Scott said Mr Morrison was well placed to address those questions.

“When David ordered misbehaving troops to ‘get out’ if they couldn’t accept women as equals in 2014, his video went viral and he started a cultural shift that has changed Australia’s armed forces forever,” Ms Scott said.

“As someone recognised internationally for his commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion, I am very pleased that he will present this year’s Oration.”

The Rotary Club of Perth President Graham Peden said the club was passionate about issues close to Mr Morrison’s heart, such as domestic violence.

"The club launched its Path of Hope initiative with the WA Salvation Army two years ago in a bid to halt the appalling spread of domestic violence and we very much support David’s views that this issue needs continued attention from all Australians,” Mr Peden said.

The Wallace Kyle Oration was established in 1980 to mark the life and works of the late Air Marshall Sir Wallace Kyle who was Governor of WA from 1975 to 1980.
