On 2 April 2016, Professor Barry Marshall hosted a visit to the Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases Research and Training from representatives of Zhengzhou University. The delegation included Professor Jiongtian Liu (President of Zhengzhou University), Professor Pengyuan Zheng (Director of 5th Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University) and other senior representatives of Zhengzhou University.

Like most of China, Zhengzhou and the surrounding Henan Province is heavily burdened by peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer caused by Helicobacter pylori . The delegates discussed the clinical and basic research approach employed by Prof Marshall and the Helicobacter Research Laboratory to combat the pathogen. The visiting delegation learned how Professor Marshall and his team tailor treatments to combat antibiotic resistant H.pylori. They visited the labs and discussed the genomic, immunology and molecular biology research undertaken at the Marshall Centre.

Following the formal proceedings, the visit was followed by dinner at the University Club. The delegation was joined by UWA Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Iain Watt and his wife, Mrs Adrienne Marshall and Mr Xianhua Chu (Associate Director of UWA’s Confucius Centre).

All parties are hopeful that future collaborations will facilitate the development of new diagnostics and treatments specifically targeted to eradicating H.pylori in the Indo-Pacific region.
