Ellie Moir, 2nd year Science student at UWA not only won the Young Carers Award for WA in November 2015, but in late February won the National Young Carers Award which was presented by Hon Christian Porter, Minister for Social Services. The three National Carers awards have been developed to recognise and raise the understanding of the impact that carers such as Ellie have on the people they support. This is just one of a number of awards Ellie has won – in 2012 she won the NAIDOC Carers’ award.

Ellie has been the carer for her mother Lynette Hallam for the past six years since her mother was first hospitalised after becoming ill suddenly and not being able to take care of herself. Ellie’s older sister, Krista McMeeken, also a Law graduate from UWA has also been a carer for her mother.

Ellie is a member of the Young Carers Advisory Council that aims to raise awareness and also offer support for young carers. The intention is to visit schools and talk to students. She is also involved with the Youth Engagement Policy project and attends meetings to discuss policies and issues affecting youth. While studying Science at present, Ellie is considering continuing onto either Psychology or Medicine.
