Fauzan Sahdi, a former PhD student at COFS, won a gold medal for University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) at the Seoul International Invention Fair 2015 (SIIF 2015). Fauzan won the medal for his work on the vertically oriented penetrometer (VOP), which was co-developed by David White, Christophe Gaudin, Mark Randolph and Noel Boylan.

A VOP is a novel penetrometer designed to assess the shallow strength of soft seabed over continuous horizontal profiles. A paper entitled ‘Laboratory development of the vertically oriented penetrometer’ has recently been published in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. The full paper can be downloaded from https://www.nrcresearchpress.com/doi/abs/10.1139/cgj-2015-0165#.Vm48-kp97mE

The SIIF 2015 expo was held in Seoul, South Korea from 26 to 29 November 2015, where more than 500 inventions from over 35 countries were showcased.
