“Teaching is a career that will challenge me; a vocation and not just a job. A great teacher can inspire a child to love learning and to take that through the rest of their lives. I am confident I can be that teacher.” – Katrina Millard Hurst

Seventeen years after graduating from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in computing and psychology, Katrina Millard-Hurst decided to return to full time study at The University of Western Australia in 2015.  Previous to enrolling into the Master of Teaching Early Childhood, Katrina had a successful career in sales and business development however, after the birth of her son William five years ago, she felt dissatisfied with her inability to give back to the community.

“I knew a teaching career would fulfil me professionally, while providing the opportunity to nurture and even inspire the next generation,” said Katrina.

“I am proud to be studying at UWA. The lecturers are knowledgeable and passionate about teaching and therefore powerfully engaging. It is a fast paced course but well structured, facilitating the building of knowledge and development of skills.”

“The opportunity to be in the classroom soon after commencing the course was fantastic and cemented my belief that I had made the right decision. I cannot wait for my next professional practice; I love being in the classroom with the children. I have been fortunate to have great mentor teachers and supervisors, which has enabled me to learn so much and get the most out of my practicum.”

The Faculty of Education at the University of Western Australia offers world-class postgraduate courses for future teachers specialising in early childhood, primary and secondary education; for current teachers; and for researchers.

Next year the Faculty celebrates its centenary. In recognition of this important milestone, students beginning an Education qualification in 2016 will be known as “The Faculty of Education Centenary Scholars”. Coinciding with the centenary is the appointment of Professors Stephen Zubrick, David Lawrence and Catherine Taylor from the University of Western Australia and the Telethon Kids Institute. This team is known nationally for leading ground-breaking studies of children’s health, education and mental health and wellbeing including the WA Child Health Surveys, the second Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing and the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. These studies are highly influential in shaping national policy and services for children and families. Stephen and his team will join the Faculty in 2016 and bring research expertise on early years learning to the Faculty.
