Students from The University of Western Australia and Mars One astronaut candidate Mr. Josh Richards have been awarded $15,000 to travel around Australia during National Science Week to present their project.

The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics students, Rowan Heinrich, Claire Quy and Andre Van Vulpen will be touring Australia with a payload they developed for Mars One’s 2020 lander for their global university competition.

The students along with Mr. Josh Richards, designed an electrolysis unit that would produce oxygen from ice in the Martian soil, named Helena, after the Shakespearean character who could “breathe life into stone”.

While Helena did not get selected to fly on the 2020 lander, they were short-listed in the top 10 and were the only short-listed entry from the southern hemisphere.

‘Inspiring Australia’ awarded the group of student $15,000 to visit schools, run public events to discuss the development of Helena, working on Mars missions and pathways into a career in Aerospace Engineering.
