A current student at The University of Western Australia as well as two others who previously studied at UWA have been awarded prestigious ‘Gates' scholarships to attend the University of Cambridge in October.

UWA student Adeline Klotz, 22, of Inglewood is one of eight students from Australia awarded the scholarship and will undertake a PhD at Cambridge.

The other UWA students selected include Dr Alexander Wood, who will complete a PhD in Medical Science, and Lauren Power, who will complete an MPhil in Multi-Disciplinary Gender Studies.  The scholarships are considered similar to a Rhodes Scholarship.

The recipients are among 54 people selected internationally, from a highly competitive international pool of 3535 applicants.  They were selected based on their intellectual ability, leadership capacity, academic fit and commitment to improving the lives of others.

Miss Klotz said she was delighted to receive the scholarship and hoped it would help her achieve her dream of becoming a leading researcher in the field of magnetic resonance.

"The chemical engineering degree I am studying at UWA really interested and inspired me," Miss Klotz said.

"I wanted to build on my existing skills as Cambridge has a reputation for excellence in this area.

"Among other things, magnetic resonance looks at how resources are used to produce every day commodities.

"With many of the resources on Earth finite, it's up to tomorrow's leaders to look at how we use our resources now to effectively plan for the future.

"Through my research and collaboration with leaders at Cambridge, I'm hoping to make a positive difference in this area, which will benefit the international community."

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the scholarships were well deserved.

"UWA is committed to providing a high quality and inspiring learning environment to enable students to achieve excellence and their full potential," Professor Johnson said.

"These students are to be commended for their achievements in receiving these prestigious scholarships, and we wish them all the best in their studies."
