Chair of the UWA Business School Board, Mark Barnaba, has been named a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM).

Dr Barnaba, who is also Chairman of Macquarie Group, Western Australia and Chairman, Global Resources Group, Macquarie Capital, received his honour during an Australia Day ceremony.

Dr Barnaba's AM was awarded ‘for significant service to the investment banking and financial sectors, to business education, and to sporting and cultural organisations.'

Dean of the UWA Business School, Professor Phil Dolan, congratulated Dr Barnaba.

"This is a very well-deserved honour," Professor Dolan said.

"Mark is an outstanding member of the business community who has shown enormous generosity in helping future generations through his position as Chair of the UWA Business School Board.

"Mark completed his Bachelor of Commerce here at UWA many years ago, and we are very proud of what he has gone on to achieve both in Australia and internationally."

Dr Barnaba is also Chairman of Black Swan State Theatre Company and a non-executive director of Fortescue Metals Group. He is co-founder (and formerly co-executive Chairman) of Azure Capital and previously has been the Chairman of Western Power, Edge Employment Solutions, the West Coast Eagles Football Club and Alinta Infrastructure Holdings. Before this, Dr Barnaba worked with McKinsey and Company.

In 2002, Dr Barnaba was the joint First Amongst Equals winner in the WA Business News' inaugural 40under40 awards and in 2009, he was the recipient of the WA Citizen of the Year Award in Industry and Commerce. In 2011, Dr Barnaba was appointed by the Premier to chair the WA Steering Committee of the Commonwealth Business Forum for CHOGM.

Dr Barnaba holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with first class honours from The University of Western Australia, and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, where he graduated with high distinction as a Baker Scholar. In 2012, Dr Barnaba received an Honorary Doctor of Commerce from The University of Western Australia and was granted the Honorary designation FCPA from CPA Australia.
