Five UWA Publishing books - including the centenary history of UWA - have been shortlisted in the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards, announced yesterday by State Library of Western Australia CEO and State Librarian, Margaret Allen.

Two of the books are written by UWA staff members: Seeking Wisdom: a centenary history of The University of Western Australia by Winthrop Professor Jenny Gregory has been shortlisted in the WA History category, and Sally-Ann Jones’ debut novel Stella’s Sea is shortlisted in the new Emerging Writers category.

Former UWA Research Fellow Penelope Hetherington's The Marriage Knot: Marriage and divorce in colonial Western Australia 1829-1900 was also shortlisted in the WA History category.

Amanda Curtin’s Elemental , a multi-generational family story of resilience and love, is shortlisted in the Fiction category, alongside authors including Tim Winton, Richard Flanagan and Evie Wyld.

Six Different Windows by Paul Hetherington is shortlisted for the Poetry award.

This year’s Awards saw 552 books entered over nine categories, with the State Library noting strong entries from WA publishing houses including UWA Publishing.

The Awards will be announced on 22 September 2014.
