UWA Publishing book Even in the Dark by Rose Lucas has won the Mary Gilmore award for poetry.

The biennial award, worth $500, recognises a first book of poetry published in the two preceding calendar years.

Rose Lucas was announced as the winner at the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) conference in Sydney on 9 July.

Even in the Dark is Lucas’ debut collection and contains delicate poems of the lives of women and the exquisite beauty contained in the act of observation.

Lucas is a literary critic and academic whose poems have appeared in literary journals Heat , Meanjin , Hecate , and have been included in Best Australian Poems 2007 and 2009 .

She was shortlisted for the ABR Poetry Prize in 2009 and is currently Chair of the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards.

Judith Beveridge said the poems in Even in the Dark are ‘...eloquent, graceful and meticulously candid.’

UWA Publishing proudly continues to publish poetry, both by keeping classic Australian poets in print and publishing new work from contemporary poets such as Rose Lucas.
