The University's first offshore Open Day was a great success in Singapore.
Margaret Anderson , Associate Director (International Marketing and Recruitment) in the International Centre , said an exhibition-style event and information sessions were complemented by alumni events. Both the International Centre and Development and Alumni Relations were delighted with the turn-out.
"We had 142 high school and polytechnic students come to our exhibition at the Grand Park City Hall," Ms Anderson said.
"Competition for places in tertiary institutions in Singapore is fierce. Many of those who don't get in to a local university will attend a polytechnic and faculties at UWA have articulation agreements, where students from Singapore are eligible for credits if they have completed their polytechnic courses."
An alumni panel discussion on the Business School's joint MBA program attracted 80 people and a round table lunch and discussion about engaging more successfully with alumni had 25 participants.
Ms Anderson said about half the alumni in Singapore were expats and about half were Singapore nationals who had studied at UWA and returned.
"Combining prospective students with alumni was so successful that we intend to repeat the event in the future, and consider it for other cities," she said.
The seminars on different courses focused on how UWA's degrees address global issues. "We focus on the career rather than the program, which makes it much more interesting," she said.
The seminar on courses in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences had more of an emphasis on the courses, but they had a huge turnout.
"Medicine had the biggest turnout, as expected. But all the faculties did well. We had all of them represented, except Education, because the courses offered there are all graduate courses and Singapore is primarily an undergraduate market," Ms Anderson said. She said the success of the Open Day will really be measured when applications for enrolments are received.
