The best way to take care of the environment is to make it part of your working day. Many people say they are too busy to find the time to do anything constructive towards living a sustainable life. But UWA's annual EnviroFest on the Oak Lawn earlier this month showed how easy it is to incorporate sustainable living without much time or effort.
There were free mechanical checks for your bicycles, to encourage staff and students to ride to the campus (which has bike lockers, a free bike repair station and free charging for electric bikes). KeepCups were promoted: a simple way to be more sustainable, rather than buying your daily coffee in an often non-recyclable cardboard and plastic cup.
The Renewable Energy Vehicle project provided the latest information on electric cars. They are becoming cheaper, with longer ranges, and UWA has a free charging station.
The central focus of the festival was an upcycling project, run by REmida , recycling and upcycling specialists. Staff and students made flowers, insects and other garden creatures from a huge array of recycled materials including plastic, wire, fabric, old CDs, buttons, scrap metal, paper and cardboard.
Their creations decorated the Oak Lawn and organisers hoped the project inspired people to recycle and reuse more at home and at work.
EnviroFest was a joint project between UWA's Sustainable Initiatives and the Guild.
