Professor Angus Cook (School of Population Health)

Professor Angus Cook was appointed to the University in 2003. The main object of his research is to create a national and international focus of activity in the growing field of Ecology and Health.  He leads a research team with a focus on these topics which include, air pollution and respiratory health matters, evaluation of the effects of water contaminants and the role of the environment in infectious diseases including vector borne diseases indigenous to Australia.  In all these areas Professor Cook has made important contributions to understanding the role of the environment in health and disease in Australia which are significant on a national basis, as well as internationally.  He has coordinated and led studies of major environmental health issues facing Western Australia as identified by CSIRO, FESA, Department of Health and the Environment, Department of Water, including recreational and drinking water quality in Perth.

Professor Anas Ghadouani (School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering)

Professor Ghadouani was appointed to the University in 2003. He leads a very successful research group focused on the study of a range of topics in water resources, ecological engineering and environmental engineering.  His group has attracted significant funding from National Competitive Schemes and industry sources which has led to the development of leading technology in the area of wastewater management.  Significant research on environmental pollution, supported by ARC Linkage and Discovery grants, has led to the development mitigation technologies and a novel risk assessment framework which is now adopted by the water industry nationally and internationally.

Professor Ghadouani is Executive Director of the $120M Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC) established in 2012. His role includes both operation and scientific leadership in this large multidisciplinary research centre.  The role also includes the coordination of the CRCWSC activities within UWA, and the management of relationships with Western Australian CRC industry partners.  He has served on a number of School, Faculty and University Committees since 2003.

Professor Ghadouani has played a leadership role in the University's interactions with China, leading to the development of  strong and ongoing partnerships with Zhejiang and Hohai Universities, which have been of great benefit to UWA.

He is an active member of a number of professional societies and advisory boards both  nationally and  internationally. He serves as an assessor for funding organisations in Australia, USA, Canada, EU, Netherlands, Poland, Qatar, Sweden and Dubai.  He acts as an expert advisor for the water industry both  nationally and internationally. Professor Ghadouani has been an editor for the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences since 2005.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Associate Professor Gavin Pinniger (School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology)

Associate Professor Gavin Pinniger was appointed to the University in 2006.  His primary field of research is the physiological investigation of skeletal muscle function in health and disease which has attracted local, national and international recognition.  This work has led to the formation of strong research collaborations across different Schools and Faculties within the University and at the same time developed new links with both Australian and international collaborators.  Whilst becoming responsible for the development of research staff and in the supervision of research students, Associate Professor Pinniger has been involved in training and mentoring staff and students in relation to career progression.  He has provided substantial contributions to curriculum development within the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.  Associate Professor Pinniger contributes to teaching and coordination of several undergraduate and post-graduate units and is the coordinator of the Physiology Honours program.
