Twenty-six UWA students and graduates from the UWA Ultimate Club participated in the ‘ultimate' exchange with Singapore Management University (SMU), competing in the Singapore Mixed Nationals Ultimate Tournament.
Held in Singapore from 26 June to 3 July 2013, the exchange formed part of the existing Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) between UWA and SMU. This MOU provides for an annual program of inbound and outbound exchanges between the two universities across a number of sports including ultimate, sailing, water polo, mountain biking, sea kayaking and netball, as well as for inbound SMU students participating in UWA's leadership development programs.
The UWA Ultimate Club exchange featured an action packed program in Singapore with their 'A' and 'B' teams participating in cooperative training and coaching sessions with SMU, training and a scratch match with 'Shiok', the top ultimate team in Singapore, beach ultimate and friendly matches which culminated in serious competition in the Singapore Mixed Nationals.
Eighteen teams participated in the 'Nationals', which was a qualifier for Singaporean teams aiming to compete in the Asia-Oceanic Ultimate Club Championships, an annual international event held in Singapore each August which attracts teams from a number of countries.
The UWA 'A' ultimate team excelled in the 'Nationals', placing 8th overall and winning tournament's 'Spirit Award' for the first time ever.
When not training and competing, UWA players were treated to the cultural side of Singapore, sampling local cuisine, participating in a 'City Challenge' organised by the SMU Ultimate Club which included ‘Amazing Race' style activities around the city, touring the SMU campus, visiting Universal Studios and sharing team dinners and t-shirt trading with SMU Ultimate Club players.
Plans are well under-way between the UWA and SMU Ultimate Clubs for the 2014 exchange.
