Two early career researchers from The University of Western Australia's Faculty of Science have won an international award for Research Excellence from the Modelling and Simulation Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Associate Professor Matt Hipsey of UWA's School of Earth and Environment and Oceans Institute, and Assistant Professor Marit Kragt of UWA's School of Agricultural and Resource Economics received their prizes last week at the biennial conference of the Society in Adelaide.

Associate Professor Hipsey's research is in the area of aquatic system science and ecohydrology and includes modelling water quality, river basin sustainability and assessing climate change impacts on estuaries and inland waters.

He is an editor of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences and currently guest editor of Environmental Modelling and Software special issue on Aquatic Ecosystem Models.

Assistant Professor Marit Kragt is in UWA's School of Agricultural and Resource Economics and CSIRO's Sustainable Agriculture Flagship.  Her research looks at integrating biophysical science and economics to make better environmental decisions. She has a particular interest in non-market valuation of environmental goods and services, and adoption of agricultural best management practices.
