PROFESSOR

Professor Sharon Purchase, (Marketing, UWA Business School)

Professor Sharon Purchase joined the University in 2001  The main focus of her research is investigating business relationships and networks including those with an international context.  She has published widely and five of her papers have appeared in the top ranking specialist journal Industrial Marketing Management .  Her research on business relationships and networks is recognised internationally as contributing to the development of knowledge.  This recognition has improved the University's reputation within the academic community for commitment to this research stream.  She is Deputy Head of the Marketing discipline within the School and was heavily involved in the development of the revised curriculum for the Marketing major within the New Courses in 2012.

She has contributed to the discipline via membership of editorial boards of academic journals as well as serving as an Executive Member of the ANZ Marketing Academy.

Professor Karen Wallman (School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health)

Professor Karen Wallman joined the University in 2005 as a researcher and lecturer.  Her two main areas of research are strongly aligned with two  of three major areas of research focus identified by the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health, these being exercise is medicine, and high performance in sport and industry.  She has demonstrated long term commitments to scholarly research and communication in these areas by a strong list of lead and co-authored publications in high quality journals which reflect a highly respected international profile.

She has appeared on national television, been interviewed by local radio and had many articles published in both local and national magazines and newspapers in relation to exercise and chronic fatigue syndrome.

She has made  a significant commitment to high quality teaching at all levels, and has been the Unit Co-ordinator teaching off-shore units at the PSB Academy in Singapore for the last five years.  She received an Excellence in Teaching Faculty Award in 2008 and has been nominated on many other occasions.

Professor Wallman attributes a large part of her success to the fantastic working relationships she has with many of the staff in the School of Sport Science and Exercise (academic, technical and administrative) and to the constant support she has always received from her Head of School.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Associate Professor James Doherty (School of Civil and Resource Engineering)

Associate Professor Doherty joined the University in 2007 after a three year period as an industry based practising engineer, specialising in geotechnical engineering and working extensively in Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe. He was instrumental in promoting UWA's international profile in China by taking part in the teaching programme at the Dalian University of Technology in China in 2011.

Since taking up his academic career in 2007, A/Professor Doherty has collaborated with leading geotechnical figures which hopefully will continue to grow and develop over the coming years.  He plays a very active role in the WA Chapter of the Australian Geomechanics Society and has developed a two day short course on geotechnical laboratory testing for industry.  In addition, he has coordinated various short course on the software packages PLAXIS and ABAQUS which are widely used to predict the behaviour of geostructures in engineering practice.

Associate Professor Daniela Ulgiati (School of Chemistry and Biochemistry)

Associate Professor Ulgiati joined the University as a Research Fellow in 2002.  This was followed by an appointment in 2005 as a teaching and research academic in the Discipline of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology .  Her research interests lie in three main areas within the disciplines of Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics and Immunology.    She has strong collaborative projects set up with groups both overseas and within Australia that are extremely active and fruitful as demonstrated by joint publications and conference proceedings, sharing of laboratory expertise, including research exchange visits and collaborative grants from competitive granting bodies such as the NIH, NHMRC and the Alliance for Lupus Research.  Dr Ulgiati's work in the field of regulation of gene expression of complement proteins, genetics of autoimmunity and B cell development is very significant and highly regarded in the field.

She was recently appointed Graduate Research Coordinator for the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry which is a very significant role within the School in facilitating and supporting students as well as maintaining the high reputation and demand for postgraduate students.  This benefits the School, enhances the students output and is likely to result in retaining links with their supervisors.
