Although asbestos is no longer mined or used in WA, it can still be found in buildings throughout the state.

As supporters of the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia walked from Dunsborough to Perth, they would have passed hundreds of homes, commercial and public buildings where deadly asbestos fibres still linger.

The Walk for Research and Awareness recently raised $50,000 for research into treatment and, eventually, a cure.  The Society presented a cheque to UWA's Professor Anna Nowak from the School of Medicine and Pharmacology and NCARD , the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases.

Professor Nowak and two of her research colleagues took part in the fund-raising walk.  Team NCARD walked the final leg from Rockingham to Parliament House in Perth.
