New laws to bring the Crawley campus of the State's oldest university entirely within the City of Perth have been welcomed by The University of Western Australia.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Paul Johnson said the move would help the University to advance its position as an international centre of excellence in world-class education and research.

The University's 53-hectare Crawley campus was currently subject to three separate local council jurisdictions - Nedlands, Subiaco and Perth - with the boundary between Cities of Perth and Subiaco running through the middle of Winthrop Hall.

"Adopting a more rational system of local government across the whole campus is vital for UWA's ongoing development as a world-class centre of excellence in advanced learning and research," Professor Johnson said.

"The University congratulates the State Government on recognising the significant need for local government reform in this area.

"It will benefit Perth and the entire Western Australian community by helping UWA to achieve its full potential as the leading international university in one of the world's best cities."
