Nearly 200 students from high schools across Perth had the opportunity to experience a 'Day in the Life' of a UWA student at our Crawley campus in the July school holidays. Among them were prospective architects, budding engineers and tomorrow's business leaders.

Students enjoyed an exciting glimpse into their future university life, participating in various workshops and interacting with lecturers and current students, as follows:

A Day in the Life of an Architecture Student

Run by Associate Dean (Education) Sophie Giles and recent Higher Award Master of Architecture graduate Ben Juckes, forty students immersed themselves in Architecture. They spent the day designing an array of Information Booths for UWA Open Day 2014, learning modelling and drawing techniques in a design studio and presenting their designs in the forum of an architectural 'crit'. The students heard from Visiting Lecturer; Associate Professor Miranda Nieboer from University of Windsheim, Zwolle, and advanced their computer modelling skills with tutorials by Ben Juckes. The students also were able to try out augmented modelling on a campus tour, through an 'app' developed by felix. for the Luminous Sculpture Exhibition for the Centenary of UWA.

Tyran Hanlon; one of the participants of the day said that "it was a fantastic experience which lived up to and exceeded my expectations. The day was definitely one of my favourite university experiences thus far."

A Day in the Life of an Engineering Science Student

Almost a hundred budding engineers spent the day exploring a variety of engineering streams available at UWA through a wide range of hands-on workshops. From managing oil spills, experiencing a wind tunnel and building paper towers, to investigating water filtering techniques with Engineers Without Borders, students discovered that there was much more to engineering than they originally thought. They also enjoyed a motorsports showcase as well as mathematics and computer science tutorials. The highlight of the day for most students was the opportunity to build their own small electric motor.

In a post-event survey, 95% of respondents rated the day as ‘good' to ‘excellent', and 85% were keen to continue pursuing engineering studies at university.

A Day in the Life of a Business School Student

More than 60 students visited the UWA Business School to experience life as a Commerce student for a day. Participants worked in small teams, mentored for the day by a current Business School student to analyse and research a real company (in this case, the home entertainment specialist, JB Hi-Fi ) and give their recommendations to the group by preparing a written report and oral presentation.

The top 3 teams presented to the whole group and the most impressive team were awarded prizes for their efforts.

The case study was led by Winthrop Professor Gary Stockport, who said that the reports and student presentations were of a very high quality, which meant judging the winner was "extremely difficult."

One of the participants said that they "had a great time, made new friends and got to know the UWA campus. Overall it was a good day spent." The senior student leaders were also very popular with the students, attracting such praise as "great mentor" and "legend."

Earlier in the year, students had the opportunity to explore life as a Landscape Architecture student, Arts (Humanities) student and Music student.
