A leading investment banker, an experienced finance professional and a respected academic will examine the future of Australian equity markets at an upcoming business forum at The University of Western Australia.
The 2020 Business Insights event, facilitated by the
UWA Business School's
Graduate Management Association, will bring together a panel consisting of: Justin Mannolini, Executive Director of Macquarie Capital Perth; Winthrop Professor Ray da Silva Rosa from the UWA Business School; and Philip Hirschberg, Managing Director of Octani Capital.
The expert panel will discuss macro factors influencing trends in finance and investment.
Topics of discussion will include:
- The role being played by central banks
- Current global sources of liquidity and direction of capital flows
- How the above factors are affecting Australian equity markets, with a particular focus on the last and next six months
- Whether the "rules of the game" in finance have changed, and whether we are experiencing trends or structural shifts
The business forum is particularly timely, with the Australian equity market having recently been downgraded to "underweight" by Citi Australia.
Since the beginning of 2012, Australian equities have seen their dividend yield drop from 5.1 per cent to a recent rate of 4.1 per cent-which is still a significantly higher rate than the global average of 2.6 per cent.
But how will slowing investment in the mining industry, continuing low interest rates, and a possible drop in foreign investment affect the future of finance? Will Australian dividend yields continue to fall? The panel will address these issues and more.
The 2020 Business Insights forum "Macro factors influencing trends in finance and investment" will be held on Thursday 20 June at 6pm at The University Club of Western Australia.
