Peter Arthur and Martha Ludwig, Associate Professors at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry have been granted a UWA 2013 Teaching Fellowship Award for their project "Enhancing and Expanding the Laboratory Modules in Contemporary Technologies Program".

These Fellowships provide an allocation of $22,000: $20,000 to enable their project to be undertaken, and an incentive of $2,000 to be used at their discretion to enhance and support their careers. The University awards a maximum of four of these Fellowships each year.

Through a teaching and learning grant (awarded 2011) Peter, Martha and Professor Paul Attwood developed a program: Laboratory Modules in Contemporary Technologies (LMCT). LMCT is designed to be an evidence-based approach to improving student learning in laboratory-based programs.

The structure of the LMCT Program is derived from workshop models used by professionals to learn new technologies and also incorporates good teaching practice sourced from the literature as well as national and international teaching websites.

The LMCT Program has already been successfully used in a level 2 Biochemistry unit. The funding will enable further develop of the LMCT Program so that it can be expanded to other science units within the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and to other Schools within the Faculty of Science.
