An acclaimed feature-length documentary that has wowed audiences in 21 European countries with footage of the intimate lives of honeybees has a strong connection to bee researchers at The University of Western Australia.

"More than Honey" will screen in Perth before making its debut in the US in June.  The special event acknowledges UWA researchers - Australian Research Council Future Fellow Professor Boris Baer and Dr Barbara Baer-Imhoof - who provided scientific expertise for the film.

The event is hosted by the UWA-affiliated Centre for Integrative Bee Research ( CIBER ) in collaboration with the Swiss General Consulate, the Swiss Honorary Consulate, the German Film Festival, the Goethe Institute and the Swiss Australian Academic Network.

"More than Honey" - the main feature film at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland late last year - was directed by the Swiss screenwriter, Markus Imhoof, who won a Silver Bear at the 31st Berlin International Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for "The Boat is Full".

Its screening during WA's Honey Week (29 April to 5 May) also acknowledges the vital role bees play in human food production.

"One-third of what we eat is the result of pollination by bees and we are racing against time to halt the world-wide decline in bee populations," Professor Baer said.

The international research team at CIBER - with partners including the Australian bee industry and international collaborators - aims to intensify research into honeybee reproduction, immunity and ecology.  The goal is to better understand honeybees to spare Australia from the dramatic losses encountered everywhere else in the world.

"More than Honey" will also screen at Cinema Paradiso on Monday 13 May at 8.45pm as part of the 2013 Audi Festival of German Films.  Tickets online .
