A student who combines communication skills, empathy and warmth with scientific knowledge has been named National Pharmacy Student of the Year.

Louise Gabrovsek, who has just completed her Master of Pharmacy course at The University of Western Australia, took the award from the best students from 22 pharmacy programs in Australia.

Her UWA Division of Pharmacy teachers, Professor Alan Everett, Associate Professor Rhonda Clifford and Assistant Professor Liza Seubert, agreed that Louise has the right personality to be a good pharmacist.

After winning the State finals, Louise went to Melbourne to compete against the six other State finalists and a wild card entry in front of pharmacists at a national conference.

Each competitor was faced with a ‘patient' from whom they had to obtain information before recommending the correct medication.

UWA's Masters of Pharmacy has just produced its sixth cohort of graduates.  There are about 35 students in the course each year and all are quickly employed.
