A ‘topping out' ceremony has marked the start of the final phase of construction of University Hall, The University of Western Australia's new student accommodation development.

Contractor Probuild is constructing more than 500 new self-contained studio and one-bedroom apartments in three new buildings at the Currie Hall site on Winthrop Avenue, Crawley.

The ceremony marked each of the buildings reaching their highest level and being prepared for roof installation this month.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson led last Friday's ‘topping out' ceremony by placing a bouquet of greenery atop the newly built landmark entrance to the renamed University Hall.

It contained a selection of plants from across UWA's grounds, representing the rich landscape heritage of WA's oldest university and the link to its newest buildings.

Professor Johnson described the ceremony - attended by around 80 people involved in bringing the project together - as an auspicious occasion.

"University Hall is a big step forward in UWA's ongoing commitment to providing a first-class student experience both within and beyond the classroom," Professor Johnson said.

"The new buildings will provide high-quality, affordable student accommodation on campus and meets UWA design standards as one of the world's top 100 universities.

University Hall is due for completion for the commencement of 2013 academic year.

The project is part of the National Rental Affordability Scheme, a joint funding initiative between the Australian and State Governments.
