Representatives from Alcoa, Schlumberger, Woodside Energy, and WorleyParsons will examine best practice in the field of knowledge management at a unique knowledge-sharing event to be held at The University of Western Australia's Business School .

Optimizing Communities: Developing pathways for effective knowledge management will pair industry practitioners with leading academic researchers from around the world to trace knowledge management from its origins in the creation of communities of practice (groups who share knowledge).

The one-day event will also feature dynamic discussion around: the impact of knowledge sharing on business results; practical technology solutions for teams which are often spread across the world; and the benefits and future of knowledge sharing across organisations.

Dean of the UWA Business School, Winthrop Professor Phil Dolan, said the event would present a unique opportunity for organisations to share their experiences in knowledge management.

‘We are looking forward to robust debate and discussion,' he said. ‘In particular, this event will be valuable because of the interaction it promotes between industry practitioners and leading researchers in the area of management and organisations.'

Sessions will include commentary by industry practitioners on the current conditions in their firms. Additionally, leading academics from around the globe will present the most recent scholarship in the domains of Information Technology, International Strategic Management, and Organisational Behaviour.

International academic presenters will include Professor Henrik Bresman, from INSEAD, Professor Catherine Cramton, from George Mason University, and Professor Ann Majchrzak, from the University of Southern California.

Participating researchers from the UWA Business School will include Winthrop Professor Cristina Gibson, Winthrop Professor John Cordery, Assistant Professor Yana Grushina, and Assistant Professor Patrick Dunlop.  The event marks the halfway point of a three-year Australia Research Council Linkage Grant awarded to Professors Gibson and Cordery in partnership with James Grey, Global Knowledge Manager at Alcoa Worldwide Refining.

Optimizing Communities: Developing pathways for effective knowledge management will be held on Friday, 5 October 2012 and is jointly hosted by the UWA Business School and Alcoa.
