The University of Western Australia Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson visited Albany on Monday, 6 th August to see first-hand the UWA's educational programs and facilities available in the Great Southern region.

The Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management (CENRM), the UWA Albany Centre and the Rural Clinical School of WA (RCSWA) took the opportunity to appraise the Vice-Chancellor of the excellent research taking place and the new innovations arising from the findings.

Professor Johnson affirmed UWA's commitment to providing regional students with opportunities to access higher education locally and continuing to take advantage of Albany's unique geographical location and environment to continue to explore research in the health and environmental science areas.

A highlight of his visit included a tour of the soon to be completed UWA Sciences Building. Now in the final stages of construction, the $6.5 million facility will provide office space for CENRM and RCSWA, a science-medical library, multi-purpose teaching and laboratory facilities, and tutorial and seminar rooms. With funding from UWA, the Great Southern Development Commission's Regional Grant Scheme and the Federal funds, the Sciences building will allow UWA to expand its teaching, learning and research programs.

Due for completion in September, the opening is scheduled for late October.
