Rebekah Garwood, (Master of Teaching, Second Year Student, Early Childhood Education) has won the runner-up prize ($500) in the 2011-12 Oxford Education Innovation Award.

This competition invited pre-service teachers from across the country to creatively fill a space in a classroom, and to emphasise how it can assist young children’s learning.

Rebekah’s project was titled ‘Exploring our World: Through an indoor learning environment.'

"In designing an area that is enticing, stimulates curiosity, and encourages collaboration I chose to sit it within an investigative unit of work entitled ‘Exploring Our World, " Ms Garwood said.

"This unit, aimed at Kindergarten children, involves an exploration of the places and relationships in a child’s world. The exploration was supported through the installation of an indoor campsite (in the corner of a classroom) and fishing area (along the adjoining wall), and the use of ICT in the form of iPads and QR Codes, " she said.
