Professor Alan Robson, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, today welcomed the appointment of leading paediatrician and infectious diseases specialist Professor Jonathan Carapetis as Director of Perth's Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.

Professor Carapetis replaces UWA Winthrop Professor and Founding Institute Director Fiona Stanley as Director of the UWA-affiliated Institute which was established in 1990 as a unique collaboration between clinical, population and other scientists.

UWA was delighted to welcome Professor Carapetis, who was highly regarded and had substantial experience and expertise in Indigenous health, Professor Robson said.

"The Institute has forged a strong reputation as a leading Australian research organisation in child health, and in particular Indigenous health.  Researchers from our University working at the Institute are leaders in their field and their work is of direct benefit to the entire Australian community.

"We look forward to continuing our excellent collaboration with the Institute under Professor Carapetis' direction."

Since 2006, Professor Carapetis has been Director of the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin where he forged new directions in research and training to tackle the big problems in Indigenous health.

Professor Carapetis will take up the position in July 2012.

Professor Stanley will continue her strong association with The University of Western Australia as a Vice-Chancellor's Distinguished Professorial Fellow.
