The University of Western Australia will be one of only six Australian universities to offer Korean language studies with tomorrow's launch of a new program supported by the Korea Foundation.

UWA graduate and State Education Minister, Dr Elizabeth Constable, will launch the program and His Excellency, Mr Taeyong Cho, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea will visit Perth for the event.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Winthrop Professor Krishna Sen, said the new program underlined Korea's growing importance to Australia.

"Korea is one of Australia's major trading partners and the strong growth in business links between our two countries has resulted in more job opportunities for graduates with Korean language skills and cultural knowledge," Professor Sen said.

"The addition of Korean will further strengthen UWA's specialisation in Asian studies and languages, which already include Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian.

"Students will also have the opportunity to undertake part of their study at Korea's leading university, Seoul National University."

The Korean launch event is supported by the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, during the Australia-Korea Year of Friendship to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
