UWA Business School
Investing in postgraduate education brings long-term benefits for graduates, according to Associate Professor Paul Crompton.
The newly appointed Postgraduate Program Director at The University of Western Australia Business School argues that the fundamentals of postgraduate education haven't changed. ‘Students are looking for postgraduate courses that will increase both their academic knowledge and skills as a future employee' he said.
While there is strong evidence that employers value postgraduate qualifications, Associate Professor Crompton also warns that students must be careful to choose the right course for them.
‘Students need to evaluate what they want out of a career, and choose their course accordingly,' he said. ‘For example, a student looking to work overseas might choose to study at an institution with international accreditations and partnerships.'
As Postgraduate Program Director, Associate Professor Crompton will oversee the academic content of the School's postgraduate degrees. He says his priority will be to ensure that UWA Business School students get the most out of their studies. ‘The UWA Business School already holds accreditation from EQUIS and AACSB, has quality staff, and corporate partnerships with leading companies such as BHP Billiton, Ernst & Young, Wesfarmers and Woodside,' he said. ‘One of our priorities now will be to strengthen these ties through increasing the level of industry engagement in our MBA program through visiting professors, case studies and industry-developed course content.
‘At the same time, we will need to ensure that the teaching and delivery of our courses keeps pace with rapid technological developments. With such a large fly-in fly-out workforce in Western Australia, for example, many part-time students are demanding access to high quality recorded lectures on demand.'
Associate Professor Crompton teaches Economics at the UWA Business School at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and particularly enjoys seeing students become excited about the subject and gain an understanding of the global macroeconomy
Prior to taking on the role of Postgraduate Program Director, he previously held positions within UWA and at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and the University of Tasmania. He has research interests in the area of mineral and energy markets and has completed several large consulting projects on the economics of mineral and energy markets, including the development of a variety of forecasting models. He holds a Bachelor of Business and PhD.
The UWA Business School currently offers a range of postgraduate coursework and research degrees, including the Master of Business Administration, Master of Commerce, Master of Professional Accounting, Graduate Certificate in Social Impact, and specialised master's courses in economics, human resources and employment relations, marketing, and a range of other areas.
