A new program offering international students a pathway into the second year of a commerce degree at The University of Western Australia was launched today.

UWA law graduate and former Federal Justice Minister, the Honourable Christopher Ellison, current Chair of WA Academic Board, Study Group Higher Education Institute, hosted the event.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the Taylors College Diploma of Commerce was designed specifically for students seeking an alternative pathway to UWA's Bachelor of Commerce.

Taylors College is based at UWA Claremont and provides the UWA Foundation Program, a foundation course for international students.

"The educational experience at Taylors College provides students with an academic stepping-stone into studies at one of the best universities in Australia," Professor Robson said.

"Our University is very proud of its reputation for excellence and record in providing an outstanding student experience.  Relationships such as that with Taylors College enable us to extend our teaching networks and enrich the education of our students even further."

The diploma is comparable to the first year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree at UWA and on successful completion guarantees entry into the second year of a UWA Commerce major.

The new diploma was developed in consultation with the UWA Business School.  Taylors College is part of Study Group, a leading international education provider specialising in world-class university access and English language programs.

Heith Mackay-Cruise, CEO of Study Group, said the Diploma was the first of its kind that had been developed with UWA.

"Taylors College and the University have been working together for over 10 years and we are proud of our close relationship," Mr Mackay-Cruise said.

"Taylors College prides itself on providing a special learning environment for international students.  Our educators and staff understand international student needs in an intimate teaching environment with small class sizes and dedicated pastoral care.  All of which ensures that we are providing well-prepared, quality students for University."

"International education is Australia's third-largest export industry, worth an estimated $18 billion annually. Innovative programs such as the Taylors Diploma of Commerce will help keep Study Group and UWA in leadership positions in this important sector."
