Two graduates from The University of Western Australia - including a former State Governor - have achieved top honours in WA engineering.

Engineers Australia named former WA Governor Dr Ken Michael as its 2011 WA Professional Engineer of the Year, and 2004 graduate Christopher Tyler as WA Young Professional Engineer of the Year.

Dr Michael, who also served as Chancellor of the University, was honoured for outstanding leadership and contribution to engineering and the profession, and exemplary contribution to the wider community.

He completed his Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering at UWA in 1961, served as Commissioner of Main Roads in WA from 1991-97 and also chaired the East Perth Redevelopment Authority.

Chris Tyler achieved first class honours in Civil Engineering at UWA in 2004 while completing a Commerce Degree in Corporate and Investment Finance.

He joined consultants Pritchard Francis as a structural engineer in 2005, was appointed Associate Director at age 28 and in 2006 became WA's first Green Star Accredited structural engineer.

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, Professor Alan Robson, said the awards recognised a long tradition of excellence achieved by UWA graduates in the field of engineering.

"It reflects a commitment to high quality engineering education over a period of almost 100 years and the high standing in the profession of engineering degrees attained from The University of Western Australia," Professor Robson said.
